The preschool program is designed to prepare children for the upcoming school years; our goal is
to have each child well prepared to enter Kindergarten.
The program for four and five year olds focuses on self-help skills, decision making & the
beginnings of more academic skills, which are learned through play and games.
Learning Through Play & Games
The children continue to work in discovery centers, which include dramatic play, science, math,
manipulative (fine motor tools for the children hand and eye coordination), toys and games,
music & movement, library, writing center and creative arts. The children practice academic
skills through hands-on exploration and teacher directed activities. Children are allowed
many opportunities to make choices about how they use the materials and equipment and how
long they want to spend exploring. Group times are child-centered, participatory sessions
that include weather, reading, calendar, music, movement, finger plays and letter of the week.
Lunchtime is a learning experience for the children as they dine family style, the teachers
sit with the children during meals and snacks to participate in pleasant conversation and
model appropriate behaviors.
Outdoor Activities
Two outdoor play-times per day are scheduled (weather permitting). We view the playground as
an extension of our classrooms. While outside children have the opportunity to participate in
group activities, play on the climber, with balls, on riding toys, etc. On inclement weather
days the class will do alternate indoor gross motor activities.
Parents are provided with daily teacher-family communication, including daily updates to keep you informed.
Generally, the children in this group will graduate to the Pre-Kindergarten room with the
class they will begin kindergarten with the following September.
Child Progress Reports
Children are assessed 3 times a year, and progress reports are given 2 times a year for
parents review, parent meet and greet are held 2 times a year, for parents to come to their
child’s class room and see what’s happening in the classroom and to ask the teacher any
questions or concerns.
